At a glance
All employees should be able to submit their travel expenses digitally in the Circula web app. Therefore, certain guidelines are followed during development to reduce barriers. Circula has made adjustments in terms of visual and cognitive accessibility and follows the international WCAG 2.1 standard.
Accessible travel expense reimbursement
Every employee should be able to submit and be reimbursed for expenses and travel costs in Circula. That is why we have invested a lot of resources in making the web version of the submission process accessible so that it can be used by everyone without restrictions or assistance.
What does "accessible" mean in the context of a website?
We are familiar with the term accessibility in our physical environments: Elevators and ramps support people in wheelchairs, and tactile floor guidance systems help people with impaired vision to navigate through buildings.
Accessibility in the digital space is less well known. Similar to a public building, people should be able to find their way around a website and interact with it, regardless of any physical or cognitive impairments. To ensure this, there are so-called "best practices" and guidelines that are observed when designing and developing a web platform.
Circula follows the international WCAG 2.1 standard.
Examples of accommodations made
Accommodations for blind people
It is common for blind people to have websites read out to them by a screen reader and to be able to navigate them. The following adaptations, among others, improve this user experience:
Alternative texts for images
Alternative texts for navigation
Clear page navigation
The possibility to use the site without a mouse.
Accommodations for people with impaired vision
The following measures have been taken for people with impaired vision:
200% zoom option without impairing the functionality of the website
Strong color contrasts for important control elements.
Accommodations for people with learning disabilities
It is also important to design a platform that is easy to understand and accessible in terms of content. The following adaptations were made for this purpose:
Meaningful structures
Consistent descriptions
Consistent navigation
No unexpected context changes during focus and input.
What was the development process?
The first phase consisted of an internal conception of how the WCAG 2.1 guidelines apply to our platform and which adaptations are necessary.
The second phase involved the technical implementation of these adaptations.
For the third phase, specialized external parties were commissioned to test our platform and identify possible improvements.
In the final phase, these improvements were implemented technically.
What follows?
The implementation of accessibility standards is a continuous process. With every new feature in the submission process, these standards are incorporated into the design process.
